    Project: Electronic Data Collection System for Avian Predation Monitoring at Federal Columbia River Power System Dams

    Location: Lower Columbia and Snake river dams
    Developed an electronic data collection, storage, analysis, and archival system for use at FCRPS dams. Worked closely with the client to develop a standardized data collection application that could be used to monitor avian populations and behaviors at multiple mainstem dams. System included (1) a customized mobile data collection application residing on ruggedized tablet PCs, (2) a cloud-based master database where all project data was stored, (3) data synchronization that enabled mobile units to communicate and synchronize wirelessly with a cloud-based master database, and (4) a secure web-based data management console that enabled field researchers and project managers to edit, manage, report, visualize, export, and analyze project data.     Designed and developed a cloud-based SQL Server database, a web-based data management console, and a mobile data collection application pre-configured and installed on rugged tablet PC’s. System allowed for the (1) integration of high resolution digital imagery of fish into the project database containing all other fish information collected at the dam, (2) automated insertion of PIT-tag codes from PIT-tag readers directly into mobile application, (3) integration of fish weight from digital scales into the data record for each fish, (4) real-time PIT-tag code notification system (for recaptures), (5) data and image synchronization between mobile devices, cloud-based database, and web-based data management portal, (6) user authentication (user name and password) to access console, (7) digital photo analysis utility that provided users with the ability to view and analyze digital photos to assess fish condition directly from console, and (8) ability to view, edit, sort, filter, export, visualize, report and manage project information.     Location: Western North America
    Developed several products as part of this project, including (1) a cloud-based geospatial database, (2) a web-based mapping and visualization application, (3) a bird counting application used to estimate colony size for ground nesting colonial waterbirds, and (4) a color-band resighting website to assess survival, distribution, and dispersal of marked birds.     Designed and developed a relational SQL Server database to client specifications. Database design took into account existing historical datasets from multiple sources and was compatible with Montana Fish Wildlife & Parks legacy databases.     Provided all data services required by the Avian Predation Research Program (Bird Research Northwest) since 1999. Beginning in 2004, services included the development, hosting, and maintenance of a cloud-based centralized database, a web-based data management portal, and a set of mobile data collection applications installed on rugged tablet PC’s. System included more than 20 different electronic data collection forms used at more than a dozen different colonies located throughout Western North America.
