Web-based data management system and electrofishing mobile data collection application for Clark Fork River system, Montana

Project: Web-based data management system and electrofishing mobile data collection application for Clark Fork River system, Montana

Client: Northwest Energy

Year: 2013 - 2017

Location: Clark Fork River System, Montana

Designed and developed a relational SQL Server database to client specifications. Database design took into account existing historical datasets from multiple sources and was compatible with Montana Fish Wildlife & Parks legacy databases. We gathered, normalized, and imported all historic data into the newly designed database.

Next, a mobile data collection application with several features was designed and developed, including: (1) metadata entry forms for collection of electrofishing, water quality, and general sample data; (2) fish data entry forms for collection of length, weight, sex, fin clips, and genetic samples; (3) integration of PIT-tag codes from PIT-tag readers directly into the appropriate data record; (4) real time user notification if a PIT-tag was previously scanned or tagged at an alternative location (i.e., recaptures); (5) GPS integration to log precise locations of sampling events; (6) integrated data validation rules greatly reducing data entry errors, and (7) wireless data synchronization to a centralized cloud-based database.

We then developed a web-based data management portal with these features: (1) security integration requiring entry of valid user name and password for access; (2) user management system allowing project administrators to add and remove user roles; (3) data dashboard displaying summary data visualizations in the form of charts, graphs and summary tables (as specified by the client); (4) fish tag query utility allowing users to search database for full or partial PIT-tag codes and to see individual PIT-tag code histories; and (5) ability to easily edit, sort, filter and export project data.

And finally, our team also selected, procured, and configured all rugged tablet PC’s used for data collection by the client.
